In Ethiopia, a transformation is underway, as discussed by Tseganesh Anbesie, an English Language Lecturer at Arba Minch University and a PhD candidate. Tseganesh is advancing her academic work and contributing to gender empowerment that reshapes lives and communities.
Tseganesh’s work addresses the challenges Ethiopian women face, particularly those from rural areas who come to university with varying levels of preparation and support. “Gender empowerment is essential,” Tseganesh asserts. “My experience as a lecturer has clarified that we must address these issues head-on.”
Her work sheds light on the realities many young women face in Ethiopia. “We see girls from all over the country, from different backgrounds. Their stories highlight the gaps in gender equality and the need to empower women in these communities,” she explains.
Tseganesh’s research has uncovered cultural barriers that hinder progress, such as proverbs passed down through generations. “The impact of these proverbs is damaging,” she says. “They send negative messages that hold women back. Empowering women means challenging these narratives and creating lasting change in their lives.”
This is where Vita’s initiatives play a role, offering practical solutions to these problems. For example, Vita addresses challenges posed by traditional cooking methods, which burden women. “The struggle women face using traditional stoves is just one of many issues,” Tseganesh notes. “Addressing these challenges is key to empowering women and improving their lives.”
Vita’s work gives women the tools they need to thrive. Tseganesh emphasises, “When we resolve issues that affect women, we are addressing community, national, and even global issues.”
Through Tseganesh’s experience and Vita’s impactful initiatives, we see how gender empowerment can uplift individuals and entire communities.
